Sun Bear Class - EYFS and Year 1

Welcome to Sun Bear Class!
Sun Bear Learning Journey
🌞 Welcome to Sunbears Class! 🐻
Hello Sunbears (and families too)! We are so excited to welcome you into our class. This year is going to be full of fun, laughter, and lots of learning adventures together.
In Sunbears, we have both Reception and Year 1 children learning and growing side by side. We learn in many different ways – through playing, exploring, asking questions, problem-solving and trying things out for ourselves. Every day is a chance to discover something new – whether it’s building, painting, writing, counting, story-telling, or making new friends.
✨ Reception will continue their journey in the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), which means learning through play, exploring the world, and developing key skills like talking, listening, making friends, and beginning to read, write and count.
✨ Year 1 will begin their exciting journey into the National Curriculum, building on everything they’ve learned in Reception. They will develop confidence in reading, writing and maths, while also exploring science, history, geography, art and much more.
We work together as one big Sunbears family, making sure every child is challenged, supported and celebrated.
When children join St Joseph’s, we ensure:
-
A smooth transition from Nursery to Reception, Reception to Year 1, and Year 1 into Year 2.
-
Strong links with parents from the very beginning.
-
A start to school appropriate to the developmental needs of all our children.
-
An environment where every child feels safe, happy and secure.
💛 Dear Parents – please know your children are at the heart of everything we do. We’ll nurture their interests, celebrate their progress, and keep you involved every step of the way. We are so looking forward to working with you to make this a happy and memorable year for your little Sunbear.
Together, we’ll make sure our Sunbears shine brightly this year! 🌟

You can leave a set of wellies, wet weather gear and a spare change of clothes (clearly labelled) so the children can enjoy play in all weather types and can change if they get too mucky or have an accident.
On The Beach
In the On the Beach project, your child will learn about animals that live in rock pools and on the seashore. They can explore days out at the beach and compare their experiences with beach holidays in the past. They will learn about the animals that live in the sea and find out about worldwide seas and oceans. They will explore the importance of looking after the environment to keep living things safe. They will learn about staying safe at the beach and find out about people who help us.
We will have a beach day at school. The children can play in the sandpit and we will fill up some paddling pools with water for some splashing fun! They can bring beach toys to play with. More info to come!!
Supporting your child at home
- Go for a day out at the beach, and investigate a rock pool.
- Look at pictures of family days out at the beach and talk about the activities you enjoy.
- Use Google Earth to look at images of seas and oceans around the world.
