Science - How can I describe what blood is and what it does?

During our KS2 science lesson, the children explored the components of blood through a fun, hands-on activity where they created their own edible “blood” mixture. Raspberries were used to represent red blood cells, helping pupils understand their role in carrying oxygen around the body, while mini marshmallows stood in for white blood cells, which fight infection. Cheerio cereal symbolised platelets, showing how they help blood to clot, and apple juice was added as plasma to hold everything together. This engaging activity helped the children visualise abstract concepts, encouraged teamwork, and deepened their understanding of how blood works in the human body in a memorable and enjoyable way.
